Monostable: This is the most widely-used type.When a current is passed through the coil, the mobile armature actuates the contacts which change state. When the current stops flowing, the armature and the contacts return to their initial position. Bistable: This type of relay usually comprises two coils mounted opposite one another. When a current is passed through the coil, it moves the mobile armature and its contacts which are held in position by means of a magnetic or mechanical system when the coil is no longer powered. To change the position a current must be passed briefly through the other coil.
